Spring is here in Acadiana, and as trees begin to leaf out, it's the perfect time to evaluate their health. Deciding to remove a tree from your property is never easy — trees add beauty, shade, and value to your home. But sometimes removal is the safest and smartest option. Here are five signs it might be time to call a professional this March.
1. The Trunk Is Leaning
A slight lean is natural for many trees, but a sudden or progressive lean — especially one that worsened over the winter — can signal root failure. If the lean exceeds 15 degrees from vertical and the soil around the base is heaving, removal should be considered before spring storms arrive.
2. The Core Is Hollow or Decayed
Trees can survive with some internal decay, but once more than a third of the trunk is hollow, the structural integrity is compromised. Now that winter dormancy is ending, look for fungi growing at the base, large cavities, and soft or crumbling wood — all red flags that are easier to spot before full leaf-out.
3. Dead Branches in the Crown
As your trees start budding this spring, pay attention to branches that remain bare. If more than 25% of the canopy consists of dead branches, the tree is in serious decline. Dead branches are also a falling hazard — especially with Louisiana's spring thunderstorms already picking up.
4. Root Damage
Construction, soil compaction, and grade changes can sever or suffocate roots. If a tree failed to produce normal foliage last year, produced smaller-than-normal leaves, or suffered after nearby construction, root damage may be the cause. Early spring is the ideal time to assess this before the canopy fills in.
5. Too Close to Structures
Sometimes a healthy tree is simply in the wrong place. If branches are growing into your roof, roots are buckling your driveway, or the canopy is pressing against power lines, removal may be the most practical solution — and scheduling now beats the summer rush.
